Curriculum Vitae

I was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, grew up in Saarbrücken near the French border, performed my 18 months of military service in Koblenz and studied Biology and Medicine in Göttingen, Giessen, Mainz and Tübingen. My degree in Biology is from the Institute for Biophysics at the University of Mainz ( Werner von Seelen ), and the MD from the University of Tübingen ( Elfriede Aulhorn ). After finishing Medical School and Internship, I spent 4 years at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biological Cybernetics(internet-link: "http://www.mpik-tueb.mpg.de/") in Tübingen in the group of Valentino Braitenberg .

In 1981, I was appointed the Head of the Electrophysiological Laboratory at the University Eye-Clinic, Tübingen, became an ophthalmologist and for 5 years treated patients, including eye surgery. Between 1989 and 1990 I was at the Center for Biological Information Processing at MIT (with Tomaso Poggio ). Since then, I spent most of my time doing basic research on the function of the visual system using psychophysical and electrophysiological methods in normal observers and patients.

My current research interests are identical with those outlined for the'Sektion Visuelle Sensorik' . In a broader sense, I would like to understand how the brain is able to analyse complex visual patterns and which parts of the brain subserve which of the different submodalities of vision.
